Elemental Cube: Titanium Ti
Featuring atomic number 22, titanium is a refractory metal that’s
used extensively in the aerospace and manufacturing industries.
Contrary to popular belief, titanium doesn’t occur naturally. Instead,
it’s found in the minerals rutile, ilmenite, and sphene. These minerals are harvested, after which the titanium is extracted.
Titanium is often used for medical implants because the human body rarely rejects it. It is considered the most biocompatible metal in the world. Titanium has a high melting point, resists corrosion, and is particularly durable and lightweight. It's as strong as steel, but only 45 percent of the weight. Titanium is a transition metal, meaning it can form bonds using electrons from more than one of its shells or energy levels. It shares this feature with other transition metals, including gold, copper, and mercury.
